John M. Carter is currently an entrepreneur and former chief of Police for the City of Crofton. The newly elected Mayor for Crofton in 2022, Robert Evans, stated Carter and another black Sergeant made the town “too dark” and dismissed the both of them from police services in the city and hired the Sheriff’s Office to patrol the town. Carter was the Chief Deputy Sheriff for the Dundy County Sheriff’s Office and was the first Black person to serve in that ranking capacity in the State of Nebraska. He is Managing Member Jaeden Guns and Ammo, LLC., which was the first black, veteran own firearm manufacturer in the United States. He was appointed, by Governor Pete Ricketts, to the Nebraska Commission on African American Affairs, which John co-founded. He currently serves as Commission Chair that state legislative organization. He served as an Intelligence Analyst in the United States Marine Corps until the first Gulf War before becoming a police officer and eventually served as interim Chief of Police in Tekamah, Nebraska. A graduate of Creighton Law School, John practiced law in the areas of taxation, bankruptcy and consumer law. He has a pilot’s license and flies for both business and recreation.
